Homemade Flaxseed Gel

Flax & Aloe Gel

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp Flaxseed
  • 350 mL Water
  • 1 tsp Xanthan gum
  • 1 tsp Glycerin
  • 2 tsp Aloe gel (more if your hair likes aloe)
  • 1/2 tsp Jojoba oil
  • 5 drops essential oil (optional)
  • Citric acid to bring pH to 5
  • 2 mL Nipaguard SCE (preservative)

Procedure

  1. Boil flax seed and water together for 6-7 minutes until a goopy thread forms (try not to get it too thick). Strain in a sieve.
  2. Dissolve xanthan gum in the glycerine to remove lumps. Stir into the strained flaxseed gel – if lumpy use a stick blender.
  3. Allow to cool a little before adding aloe, jojoba oil, essential oils of choice and your preservative.
  4. Optional: Test pH and add a little citric acid dissolved in water if needed – look for a pH around 5-6.
  5. Pour into pump/squeeze bottle.

With the preservative, this gel should keep for 6 months, though discard if it starts to get an odd smell. If you choose not to use a preservative, store in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze your unused mixture.
